When I heard this song as a kid I thought it was funny and ironic.
"Now the whole damn bus is cheering, and I can't believe I see, a hundred yellow ribbons..."
I interpreted these lyrics to mean that an entire bus-load of convicts had all told their girlfriends the same thing. So now everyone was happy, but no one really knew who each yellow ribbon was meant for.
The whole yellow ribbon thing seems pretty unnecessary. You know, why didn't he just ask her to write back to him? Guess it wouldn't be as good a song.
